13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:13-16
When you think of School, what comes to mind?
In the past I would instantly think of words such as education, safety, neighborhood and many more positive thoughts. Unfortunately, today my thoughts steer in a slightly different direction as I am faced with the barking reality of how schools around the nation have changed. Not just the atmosphere of many schools but also the outlook on religion. As a mother of Christian children, one of the most painful moments was when school officials decided that we no longer needed God to run our schools. They could have never been more wrong about that, and the events that followed proved their incorrectness.
For many, the reality is that we no longer feel the umbrella of safety and security that we once felt when sending our children to school. Not necessarily because of a particular incident that may have occurred at our particular school, but because of the many incidences that have occurred in schools around the country. Parents are left with many unanswered questions, unresolved feelings and unhealthy outlooks with regards to schooling. I often find myself asking myself questions such as how do I encourage my child to be "Salt AND Light", as the word of God tells us in Matthew 5:13-16, in times such as these? How can I teach my children how to live like Christ in a place were Christ isn't accepted? Have these questions ever run through your minds? Maybe not these exact questions but something similar.
One thing I love about God is how he is concerned about everything that concerns me. The other day while I was serving at a conference, I ran into a wonderful lady named Ingrid. Ingrid has an organization called "Partner with Schools". I was personally excited when I met her and found our about her mission with regards to school. I had been seeking God about this issue of prayer in schools and didn't even know how to begin to address it. Ingrid graciously shared her heart with me and gave me some information that I found very helpful in having Christian children in the public school. God has birthed in her an amazing organization that purposes to bring God back into the schools.
I could go on and on about all the great things that she does but I was most impressed by the direct way she addressed our children's religious freedom in school. Moms, it is still our assignment to teach our children to be salt and light. To teach them to walk like Christ even if they have to walk alone because God said in Hebrews 13:5 that He would never leave them nor forsake them, so standing for SOMETHING alone is better than standing for nothing with a crowd of people. As we cover our children in prayer and ask God for his protection, lets also come together with prayer and support to get God back into the schools.
