Hold Onto Your Birthrights

Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished. He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished! "Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.“Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left. Genesis 29:34

For the first time ever I was reading the above passage and a message screamed out to me, the importance of holding onto our birthrights.

How many times do we make bad decisions when we are hungry? For me especially, I tend to be a bit mean or anxious when I am in need of food. Not eating will cause my physical body to become weak. I sometimes will get a headache which will cause me not to think clearly. My emotions are also attached to my need to feed my physical body.

I took this a step further and thought about how my physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional self are affected when I don't consume my spiritual food. When I am not reading my word daily or when my prayer life isn't as consistent as it needs to be, its affects all of my decision making.

Jacob reminds me of how the enemy takes advantage of our weak moments by tempting us with temporary satisfactions that lead to eternal mistakes or selling our "birthrights". If we aren't constantly feeding our spirit man with its needed food then we make it easy for the enemy to take advantage of us.

The Bible is full of God's promises for His children. There are so many things that we are entitled to and we easily allow them to slip away from the choices that we make. I just want you all to realize the importance of reading your world daily and staying connected to Christ through prayer. When your decisions are attached to the things that God is telling you to do you cannot go wrong. I don't want any of us to sell our "birthrights" for temporary satisfaction which could lead to a life of destruction.

I'm praying for you all. Have a blessed day!
